Invigorade is the ideal endurance sports beverage for athletes who shun the use of preservatives, artificial flavors, colors and sweetners and high fructose corn syrup. While natural remains a meaningless, unregulated term in the food and beverage industry, this company has integrity and its claim is an honest one. Check out the clean label below which includes pure cane sugar, sea salt and vegetable juice in lieu of dyes. It’s also caffeine free which doesn’t bother me as endurance athletes benefit more from java as a kickstart and midway jolt rather than a constant stream.

At first gulp (athletes don’t sip), the flavor packs less tang and sweetness than it’s competitors but I actually prefer the lack of sugary after taste. Here’s how you can compare the above data based on your nutritional sports needs.
1. Carbohydrates. The maximum amount of carbohydrate that can be absorbed in an hour is 60 grams because our internal transportation systems become saturated. The body can be trained to increase absorption up to 90 grams per hour for endurance activities by chosing products that use multiple transportation pathways for example maltodextin, cane sugar or sugar, dextrose and modified food starch. Sports drinks that rely on high concentrations of fructose may cause you gastric distress because they are absorbed more slowly. Fructose requires conversion by the liver before it can be used by the muscle for energy.
My favorite Invigorade nutrition fact is that is has 1/2 the sugar grams of its competitors. It’s multiple tri-carbohydrate blend uses multiple transport pathways to provide more energy over longer distances. They don’t rely on a massive sugar load to help you go the distance.
2. Sodium and Potassium. Heavy sweaters may choose to use a product such as Hammer Endurolytes in endurance activities as none of these formulas are able to keep up with electrolytes lost in prolonged exercise (2+ hours) during hot, humid conditions.
4. Protein. Accelerade is the only product offering a whey and soy protein blend during exercise to prevent muscle breakdown. This has been proven to enhance fluid balance and energy uptake, reduce muscle fatigue and speed recovery. While Invigorade lacks grams of protein, it does contain the amino acid (protein building blocks) B-alanine which helps buffer hydrogen ion build up in the muscle causing your performance to drop. This too leads to better performance and shorter recovery time.
Flavors include the obligatory tropical punch but I much prefer the coconut and mango orange. Launched in March 2014, it’s one of the newest endurance drinks on the market.
