Simply Snacking

Disclaimer, I have historically associated dried been as a snack best saved for hunters, hikers and men.  However, I’m always on the look out for lean, high protein and portable snacks for the:

  1. Athlete who needs to nourish muscle growth throughout the day
  2. Over weight individual who may benefit from portion controlled snacks
  3. Older adult who is sometimes challenged to get adequate protein
  4. General consumer who needs healthy snack recommendations

20160612_181435Simply Snackin are all 1 ounce, portable, portion controlled, 60 calorie servings so they’re a perfect for all four of my customer groups.  They’re also a good add for those with celiac or gluten intolerance as they’re gluten-free and all but the Italiano Chicken with Romano Cheese are lactose free.

Athletes  – These are a good source of high biological value protein meaning they have a good amino acid mix to nourish muscle growth, provided you’re putting in the training time. They contain between 280-300 milligrams of sodium per serving so they’re also a nice, salty, electrolyte replacement.  At 0-4 grams of carbohydrate per serving, they’re not a good glycogen source for either fueling or replenishing. The venison contain 6%,  beef  4% and chicken 2% of your daily value for iron to help in the delivery of oxygen rich blood.  Simply Snackin was recently named to the 2015 Runners World Top Packaged Snack Award Winners!

Weight Management – Their portion controlled size is great for mindless eaters and 60 calories is a reasonable snack choice. Protein helps to curb hunger so this makes them a good mid morning or midafternoon snack.

Older Adult –  While some older adults may be challenged by the packaging, the meat is tender and much easier to chew than traditional beef jerky or sticks.  If you are on a sodium restricted diet, one serving averages 10 percent of your daily limit so choose wisely.  That said, they contain 50 percent less sodium than traditional beef jerky.  If you have heart disease, Simply Snackin is a lean source of protein.   The beef and venison varieties contain just 1 gram and the chicken contains 0 grams of saturated fat.

General Consumer –  I like the fact that the beef variety are 100% grass-fed, all beef and chicken are raised without antibiotics or added hormones and that the venison are a free range. They are minimally processed with no artificial ingredients or food dyes.  However, there is a but… The World Health Organization does classify beef jerky as processed meat, a Group 1 carcinogen. This means that there is sufficient evidence these foods cause colorectal cancer when consumed in excess. For every 50 gram portion of processed meat eaten daily, the risk of colorectal cancer increases by 18 percent.  “Simply Snackin” 1 ounce portion size equates to 28 out of the 50 grams proven to be problematic.  My advice to the general consumer is to enjoy these foods once in a while balancing them with a diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy.

Below is a product run down Simply Snackin flavors, key nutrients and ingredients. There’s a wide variety of flavor profiles and they’re all pretty tasty!
