Fried Food a Big Factor in Heart Disease, Stroke An analysis of multiple studies showed that those who ate the most amount of fried food per week vs. those who ate the least had a 28% greater risk of major cardiovascular events, a 22% higher risk of heart disease and a 37% higher risk of heart failure. Not really an aha moment here. It’s similar to findings that texting and driving increases accident rates but a good reminder none the less.

Skipping Dinner Might Be Making You Gain Weight Skipping dinner was “significantly associated” with weight gain of 10% or more, and having a BMI over 25, which is classed as overweight. Researchers studied >25,000 students over a 3 year period. Don’t be a dinner ditcher.

Strength Training Builds More Than Muscles Did you know that changes related to age, not moving enough and poor diet result in a gradual loss of bone mass to the tune of 1% per year after age 40. Get lifting.

Regular Exercise Offers Stronger Mental Health Benefits than Cardiorespiratory Fitness  A cross-sectional study of 36,595 adults found exercising 1-2 per week is associated with lower odds of depression/anxiety symptoms. Exercise is not the cure-all but the benefits are many.

Mental and Emotional Health

HRE’s Number of the Day: Mental Health Help Forty-five percent of adults have considered getting mental health treatment, 88% have had at least one medical symptom and one in six started therapy for the first time. Great job taking action.

The Importance of Gratitude in Marriage “Feeling appreciated and believing that your spouse values you directly influences how you feel about your marriage, how committed you are to it, and your belief that it will last.” I like this very much.

Recipes of the Week

Make-Ahead Smoothie Freezer Bags Just add milk or water, blend and let your day begin!

Sicilian Cauliflower Savory tasty of onion, tomato, garlic, red pepper, parsley, sweet golden raisins and tangy vinegar, textured by chickpeas and toasted pine nuts are the ingredients for the Mediterranean, slow roasted cauliflower.

Look what I found in my inbox this week. A free coupon for Siggi’s Yogurt. As an athlete, I’ve always been a fan of Greek yogurt because of the higher protein content. I also like the calcium to help maintain bone density, potassium for muscle contraction and probiotics for gut health. Siggi won me over when he hosted a yoga class and joined in with a bunch of dietitians. His yogurt is pretty darn good too.
